Ground Hog Day! – Kaanapali

6 November 2009

Today I went to work at my leadership training day, which seemed to go on forever, as work frequently does when you are going on holiday the next day. I hurried home and finished the last of my packing and then headed to the airport the taxi ride seemed to go forever and there was a lot of traffic.

I got to the airport and met my group, went through duty free and boarded my Hawaiian airlines flight to Honolulu. The flight seemed to go on forever and as usual I couldn’t sleep on the plane. I managed to watch a few movies before we got to Honolulu. We got off the plane and the line for immigration was unbelievably long! We waited ages.

While in Honolulu I decided to get some food as the plane food had been exceptionally bad. I went to burger king and had a medium meal. It was the largest amount of burger king I had ever seen. The medium coke was bigger than our large. I forgot what the US food experience was like!

We waited around Honolulu airport before boarding our flight to Maui. We got on a much smaller plane and took off. The views were spectacular flying over the island, but I kept falling asleep as I had now not slept for over 24 hours.

Once we got to Maui we landed and met Tom from the Maui tourism board. Who immediately put a lei around my neck and gave me a big hug. I thought that was awesome and put shell leis around our necks. We then headed out to pick up our hire cars, which really did take forever. Laura and I took photos of us standing in front of Corvettes while we were waiting. We then took off for our first resort. The Westin Kaanapali Villas.

Hawai’i – first step, cocktails

I got dressed quickly and went down to the lobby to meet up for the site inspection, marvelling at the fact that…this is my job. We did the obligatory site inspection and then were taken to dinner at the restaurant. We had a three-course meal and free drinks which was awesome. I immediately got into the cocktails. We stayed up pretty late and I can honestly say that by the time I went to bed I had never been so tired in my life. Due to the fact that when you fly from Sydney to Hawaii you are almost flying back in time and have to live the same day over again. I went back to my room and had a bath in the giant spa and watched a couple of episodes of Red Dwarf on my laptop, quietly thinking that I was in paradise. After my bath I collapsed into the giant bed and was asleep instantly after my 36 hour day.
