Around the waterhole – Etosha National Park

14 February 2010

Another early start today as we left our bush camp at Spitzkoppe, we drove back out along the dirt road on our way to Etosha National Park. Most of today was taken up with driving, but we managed to get to Etosha in time for lunch, which was a relief, as we were all under the impression it was going to be a full day’s drive.

We put up our tents and had lunch, which was followed by a swim in the campsite pool, which was circular, which instigated another whirlpool. It was another really hot day, so the swim was very welcome. We went down to the water hole which was surrounded by zebras and springbok which was truly a sight. It was wonderful to see them all come down at sunset and start drinking, with the hues of the multi-coloured African sky reflected in the water. These are the sights you come to Africa to see.

Our first giraffe

After we had a bit of a rest, we went for our first game drive. It had been raining, so we didn’t see many animals. We did see a few more zebra and our first giraffe. We came back and had dinner and then went and sat at the bar and watched jackals attack the rubbish bins, which was a bit of a laugh, especially when one managed to up end the contents, obviously finding nothing worth eating and the peed on it.

We all went for a last-minute look at the waterhole, but it seemed apparent that all the animals had gone to bed. I decided to do the same and fell asleep listening to the sound of lions roaring in the distance. Hopefully we will see some tomorrow.
